Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Training Courses

If you are interested learning how to sail in a more structured training course, or want to further your existing sailing skills, we are a RYA recognised training establishment, and run several practical and shore-based courses each year.

Our training courses are competitively priced, for members, compared to commercial sailing schools.

Training courses may be booked on our website here.

Find Out Which RYA Course is Right for You

The BBC Yacht Club runs the following practical RYA courses from the RYA Cruising scheme

Competent Crew: Course can be done with little or no experience.  By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines.

Day Skipper: This is a first course which teaches you how to command, navigate and moor a yacht during daylight hours.  Once you have completed your Day Skipper course, you can apply for an ICC (International Certificate of Competence). The ICC will allow you to charter abroad.

Coastal Skipper:  This course is for you if you have considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation and want to undertake coastal passages by day and night. You will get the chance to skipper more challenging passages under the guidance of the instructor.

Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Preparation and Exam: The RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.  The Yachtmaster Preparation Course coaches you to develop your skills and knowledge to the required standard.  You can put yourself forward for an externally assessed exam to gain the qualification.

The table below sets out minimum entry requirements for each RYA course.  All new members can request a RYA Log Book, which is used to record your sailing trips.  You will need to keep this up to date ready to start a RYA practical training course.

How The RYA Courses are Run

All of these courses are generally five days (Monday to Friday) but on occasion it may be possible to schedule the courses over weekends. As with a usual club sailing trip, the courses are run from our base on the River Hamble.  Costs of food and moorings are shared amongst the crew.

Shore Based RYA Training Courses

We work with other suppliers to offer RYA shore based courses to our members too.  These courses may include:  First Aid, Sea Survival, Radar.
